Historical relevance of location
Up to 1980, kieselguhr was extracted from deposits in northern Germany and processed into saleable products, at the end predominantly as a filtering medium for the beverages industry, especially breweries.

Geological relevance of location
Abundant growth of siliceous algae (diatoms) in shallow freshwater lakes led to the formation of diatomite (kieselguhr). In northern Germany it was formed during the warm interglacial stages of the Pleistocene.
