Geological relevance of location
Laterite is a residue of rock weathering over a long period. This soil consists of the weathering residuals such as quartz, iron- and aluminium oxides. It is the final stadium of a soil forming process resulting in low natural soil fertility. Therefore, it is not well suited for agriculture. However, laterite is used as road building material.
