Historical relevance of location
Chromite ore from the Gelçik mine, eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Gelçik is one of the few leftover active chromite mines in Turkey. Chromite is mainly mined to produce ferrochrome, which is used by the industry to improve the quality of steel. Along fissures and cracks the chromite contains lots of the purple chromium-clinochlore kaemmererite and a little green uwarowite (chromium garnet). Because of their excellent kaemmererite crystals the specimens from Gelçik are highly demanded by collectors all over the world.
